I had been meaning to read this book for years, ever since I found out a film was being made, and as soon as I started reading it I kicked myself for not having read it before now. I absolutely loved the premise of the novel, and it is so beautifully written that it really makes it seem as though this is a world we might one day live in. Jonas is a wonderful character, and his relationship with The Giver was brilliant, it gave the plot even more impact. I will ...more

For some reason I never got to this book in middle school, but since it's being turned into a movie I wanted to make sure I read it before then. I have always hated the cover and that's why I didn't read it when I was 12. I hate the cover. But whatever, don't judge... The story is fine though the second part felt rushed. I'm an optimist when it comes to the interpretation of the ending. Wish I had read this when I was younger.

October 2014 Book of the Month

It has been over twenty years since Lois Lowry’s controversial children’s story The Giver was published and it certainly deserves its status as an essential modern classic. Jonas has grown up in the perfect world of the Community whose survival relies on strict rules and rituals. Adults are assigned spouses and children (one boy and one girl) as they take up their role within the society. At the beginning o ...more

I wish I could give 1/2 stars. I would give this book 4 stars when it comes to the ease of reading and the characters within it. However, after I was finished, I didn't necessarily enjoy the book as a whole.
Very quick read. Kind of pulls you in and then you're halfway through it. Through the book, there were parts that were disturbing (that humankind could no longer hold the memories of the past because of the feelings they would bring).

I liked this book, it had a different aspect on life, how emotions were just connected to each other and wouldnt be complete if one was missing. and if a human were to live a humanly life had to go through it all, and experinece the most of it.
I liked the character development and the choice jonas has taken he took the hard way and not the easy path, everything have a price after all.
