This Russian-inspired Leviathan-esque steampunk-fantasy is a fast read all the way. Although it's not until the last hundred pages that the pacing dials up into the stratosphere - I mean, wow. What a way to end it! - the earlier parts are loaded for bear (pun not intended) with plenty of world-class world-building on Bardugo's part.

Though I still prefer the Six of Crows duology because I feel like that series has better characters (and more diversity too), it's here, the first installment of Ba ...more

I missed you every hour. And you know what the worst part was? It caught me completely by surprise. I'd catch myself just walking around to find you, not for any reason, just out of habit, because I'd seen something that I wanted to tell you about or because I wanted to hear your voice. I loved this and can't wait to continue on to the next one. This book definitely kept me guessing I wasn't sure where it was going to end. At first Alina kind of annoyed me but after she unlocks her power she starts to come into her own. I can't wait to see more of this world. I liked the extra note that I got to read from Mal's point of view it was very interesting seeing things from his view and what he was going through. ...more

Ho aspettato un po' prima di recensire questa trilogia perchè volevo riflettere e capire esattamente perchè non mi avesse conquistato. Ho adorato Ninth house della stessa autrice e mi ha colpito il fatto che invece io non abbia amato questa che per molti è la sua opera forse migliore...e quindi volevo sapervi dire esattamente il perchè io non l'ho apprezzata fino in fondo.
In primis credo che sia dovuto al fatto che in alcuni punti mi ha ricordato la trama di altre serie fantasy che ho letto in p Ho aspettato un po' prima di recensire questa trilogia perchè volevo riflettere e capire esattamente perchè non mi avesse conquistato. Ho adorato Ninth house della stessa autrice e mi ha colpito il fatto che invece io non abbia amato questa che per molti è la sua opera forse migliore...e quindi volevo sapervi dire esattamente il perchè io non l'ho apprezzata fino in fondo.
In primis credo che sia dovuto al fatto che in alcuni punti mi ha ricordato la trama di altre serie fantasy che ho letto in passato: protagonista giovane che non sa di avere dei poteri o li nasconde, viene scoperta, deve imparare ad usarli, altri cercano di usare lei per i suoi poteri, lei impara ad usarli e salva il mondo e magari nel frattempo vive un triangolo amoroso, o viene tradita o altro....
Non dico che questa serie abbia una trama banale, tutt'altro, il mondo in cui è ambientata è molto fantasioso per alcuni aspetti e mi è piaciuto che il tipo di magia presente in quel luogo venga spiegato molto bene e sia stato studiato nei minimi dettagli, ma quel senso di già visto...è rimsato con me per tutta la lettura.
Secondo, non ho empatizzato per niente con la protagonista. Capita. Questione di pelle, proprio non capivo la sua logica molte volte.
Terzo e credo che sia il motivo principale, tifavo per il cattivo del libro. Non voglio fare spoiler a rigurado, ma in parte capivo di più le sue ragioni che non quelle della protagonista. Alla fine della trilogia l'autrice gli fa fare cose talmente imperdonabili che diventa impossibile scusarlo, è vero , ma...continuavo a capirlo. E secondo me il suo punto di vista specie all'inizio pur con tutti i difetti che aveva era non dico valido ma...logico per lui e forse mi sono ritrovata a pensare se la protagonista avesse agito in modo diverso con lui fin dall'inizio della loro conoscenza se si fosse fidata di più da subito forse avrebbe potuto influenzarlo fore avrebbe potuto mitigarlo... se non avesse amato un altro forse...tanti forse, tanti se. Fatto sta che io empatizzavo più con lui che con lei, specie nel primo libro.
E quindi per questi tre motivi più altri minori non ho adorato questa trilogia, anzi arrivata al terzo libro ho faticato a finirla. ...more

Alina is an orphan that discovers she has powers beyond her belief. She is take off to train as a Grisha, but finds that the intrigues of court are more sinister than she could ever imagine. She is the favorite of the Darkling, the most powerful Grisha in the kingdom, but that comes with a price she is not sure she is willing to pay.
