I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down, and I am not one for postmodern or experimental fiction. Cloud Atlas is a genre exercise, and a very good one; Mitchell expertly flips between colonial travelogue, lurid crime thriller, Riddley Walker-esque post-apocalyptic sci-fi, among others, drawing complex parallels and snaking thematic threads throughout the stories. Cloud Atlas could so easily have been just a clever book with a neat gimmick if not for the fact that David Mitchell is a brilliant storyteller. The book presents interesting themes and a fascinating structure but more than that it spins yarns that are captivating in their own right. Each of the six stories is a novella that would be difficult to put down on its own and the interlocking nature of the narratives pulled me in even deeper.
