I read this as a teenager. It was on a list I had to read by some deadline we had in high school. I wasn't too thrilled to be forced to read science fiction. But obviously, reading the book changed my mind about books that try to focus on the consequences of increasingly sophisticated technologies and the ramifications of "progress." The book starts in very old history (in man's terms) with the description how apes got their thinking from a strange artifact. In the 20th century, a related thing was found and an expedition was sent to Saturn to find out what it is all about. The starship contains the HAL computer with (artificial?) intelligence. These parts are captivating, and the last part of what happens after the artifact is found is very strange and unimaginable due to the limitations of our brains.
