Shelves: cover-obsession, historical-fiction, read-in-2016, journeys

The hype is real. This is a compelling, tightly written, strikingly constructed story. Whitehead pulls no punches in highlighting the gut wrenching and brutal realities of slavery and the time period. My only complaint is that it's emotionally distant with a lack of character development, but even this seems a purposeful stylistic choice, just not one to my taste. ...more
