Shelves: historical-fiction, setting, houses, ww2, read-in-2015

I started this book thinking its prose was a bit too flowery and that it moved too sluggishly. Then somewhere along the line, all of a sudden, I found myself caring deeply about the fates of ALL these characters. I was on the brink of tears for the last 100 pages of the book and found its conclusion(s) so gracefully satisfying. Spectacular.
