Having lost a parent at a young(ish) age I often take issue with the way authors portray the death of parents. They seem to either idealize or vilify the deceased, but Macdonald doesn't spend much time lamenting, instead she focuses all her pain and energy on her hawk. Slowly she works out her internal struggles and depression by training the bird, ultimately letting it fly freely. I know nothing of birds, hawking or falconry, yet found this book totally relatable.

A disarmingly lovely book filled with exquisite moments of truth and beauty. Even just the vocabulary of falconry and nature is fascinating, fresh, and gorgeous.
