This is the first book in the Martin Beck series and the first one that I’ve read. I’ve got a thing about reading in order wherever possible and have been keen to read this one for a long time now. It’s only 200 pages but for some reason I actually found it took me a long time to read! I think there is something about the methodical nature of the procedural elements that at times were a little tedious for me. Really interesting to see policing in the 60th inclusive 60th attitudes to women (I could not help being infuriated on behalf of Mrs Beck and without the aid of modern technology. No internet, no skype, no mobile phones, no DNA analysis, no real forensic crime investigation, no easily accessible databases, just good honest policing and experience. Excellent. My book had a forward from Henning Mankell and you can see how Wallender could have emerged from this inspirations (Malender - Wallender).
