Fantastically suspenseful and filmic. Vivid portraiture of a place and a time period and the people who populate it. The final scene is beautiful, but the last sentence, I feel Capote got a little carried away with the alliteration. Unless there's some greater meaning I'm missing.

Before I forget, did anyone else notice that the book was dedicated to Harper Lee?
So did the crime fit the punishment? Which character is worse? Perry who had an awful, disgusting childhood, was beaten, usually homeless, abused and treated like a "slave" but, according to him, killed 4 innocent people. Or Dick who had a standard childhood came from a good and strict family, played sports in high school, met the women of his dreams and married her. He didn't kill the family but he did instigate t ...more

I enjoyed reading the book and liked Capote's ability to move between storylines and weave the tale. I'm not sure I would call it a must-read, but I guess it was the first successful book of its genre (true-crime novel). It feels to me more like journalistic reporting than a novel, but Capote is a good writer. ...more
