No wonder I fondly remember reading it in middle school. It has fun, love, and a bit of seriousness. For a book written in 1960s, it says eighteen is too young to marry. Instead, enjoy your youth, go to college, try things.

I can understand why not everyone likes this one, but I really do. I like everything I've ever read by this author, and of the 4 someone is calling the first love series (they are 4 stand alone books, not a series!) this one is in the middle.
Like the one I like the least, Jean and Johnny, the parts of this one I don't like are when Barbara (and sometimes her sister) behave in less than mature ways. The writing is so vivid, you get annoyed with "these kids"! But of course that is the point, the
