The Enchanted April is an enchanting book!
Within the first couple of paragraphs I knew it was the book for me! I am still in Lockdown and I needed something that would help me escape the world's frightening realities. & mostly set in one of my favourite countries - what could be better?
Answer - not much!
A chance spotting of an advertisement leads to two virtual strangers, Lottie & Rose, deciding to rent an Italian castle together & have a month's escape from their dull, unhappy lives. The ...more

OKAY, LET THE GUSHING BEGIN.
Oooohhhhh not to be unoriginal, but really the perfect word to describe this book is “enchanting”.
My word was this good.
There’s something about certain classics written in the 1920s/1930s that is simply so charming. The simple yet eloquent sentences, the glorious fashions, the tea-drinking in gardens and letter-writing in drawing-rooms.
Oh, what I wouldn’t give for an escape to San Salvatore right about now!
Although I doubt going there would be as good as reading ...more

I was tempted to subtract one-half star only because I wanted the book to go on! Four English ladies, strangers to each other and each unhappy in her own way, agree to share a rented Italian villa for the month of April. The stunning beauty of the place, the time to reflect on their own lives, and the warmth they begin to feel for each other, leads them to blossom like the flowers in spring. The introduction of two men into their midst creates a different but not unwelcome dynamic. Brilliant cha

This is the story of four women and how they escape the various things that plague their daily lives, and how they come to change and repair their lives, during a stay at an Italian castle. It's very much the sort of book you have to be in a specific mood for. If you are in need for something calm, gentle, prettily written, thoughtful, wistful, with a comprehensive happy ending, this might be the very thing for you. I enjoyed it more by the end than I did at the beginning, because it wasn't what

I only discovered Elizabeth von Arnim recently. From the Introduction to this book I learned that she was born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was cousin to the writer Katherine Mansfield and married a Prussian Count. In her day she was a very popular and successful writer with several of her novels being best sellers. One novel 'Vera' was compared to the writing of Jane Austen. Therefore I find it surprising that she is so little known today.

2.25 stars (ok)
Based on the plot summary, I was looking forward to a girls' trip at an Italian medieval chateau surrounded by a beautiful landscape with women who would be making an effort to maintain a positive attitude in both enjoying their surroundings and supporting each other in their life struggles. Instead, I felt as though I arrived to find not much of the surroundings, a subdued mood with uninspiring activity, numerous petty issues, and the early arrival of significant others.
