I've read this book at least 20 times. . .the first time when I was 9, in Mrs. Veenstra's fourth grade class. I clearly remember how the scenes played out in my head, and where my interests and sympathies focused in that read.

Then come the reads at various stages of growth and life landmarks, and appreciation widens, deepens and in some cases springs up brand new, never before considered. Here I am now almost six decades later reading with two of my grandchildren, at least two days a week, with 1000s of miles between us, and still the tight spirit of family, of my tribe, wraps us up via zoom in as vivid a way I can appreciate as when we are skin-touching close. Different, but the same appreciation for shared experience, and wonder at the possibility of it all.

Our method is to pick a book, and each read a full page until finished. Any new words or pronunciation are discussed, and unknown items get a tour of YouTube or Google. A great deal of fun. My girl is 11, and we read Anne of Green Gables through to the very end. At times when I melt and get that cracky-crying-woman voice while reading, she is sweet as can be and steps in and takes over until I gather myself together. Reading Anne with her is one of the best memories of my long life, one I'll be happily taking with me when I go.

We laughed over Anne's rapidfire free association observations on life, and the deer-in-the-headlights responses of Mathew and Marilla as they took on this new project, called Anne (with an E!). We fell out of our chairs when Anne reached for salt instead of sugar in her baking for company episode, and when she unintentionally got her best friend Diana got drunk with Marilla's "special" supply. I mist up at those magic intersections as we read, realizations the characters have as they savored the love and wonder of life experiences being matched by what was happening to us in our zoom meetings. It was of all my AOGG reads - so far - the best, with that Darling Girl.

So, of course, all the stars. Thank you LMM for providing the opportunity and blessing for all of us to read of your Anne. Thank you to all you writing such books that bring us together (old and young), and offer us ways to learn about and love humanity a little more with every page. And lastly, thank you to all you who teach or have taught us to read. Blessings in our lives, all of you. And you too, Dear Girl for who you are and your time spent with me. ...more
