Having just read this book again for the umpteenth time (but not for many years), I found the old magic to be present. I wouldn't call this a children's book, because the language is quite elaborate (the first sentence in the book is 149 words), but the story certainly resonates with all ages. I know I first read it at the age of 12 but I was a ferocious reader. I had forgotten how funny it was in places, but it is also very sad.
