Wow. That was something.

This fantasy book has the most interesting setting; it's almost a dystopia without quite getting there. It's a series of 4 kingdoms, all monarchies, but all of which arose out of "The Crossing." Apparently that was a group of ships that traveled from what sounds like North America to Europe. There are hints of Britain and France, but Tearling is named for the man who founded it. A great start to a fantasy series with a female protagonist. It was interesting to see Kelsea develop and mature as a leader over the course of the book. Many unanswered questions have me wanting to pick up the second book...right now!

This is the first book I have read this year and it was a good start. I enjoy fantasy books and indeed this novel doesn't have the most unique plot but it's different enough to be very enjoyable. I especially like the characters than could have been tropes but are much more. Kelsea and Mace are somewhat stereotypes but their flaws make them unique.
I also loved the reference to our world which Erika Johansen sparkled through her story.
