Wow. That was something.
This fantasy book has the most interesting setting; it's almost a dystopia without quite getting there. It's a series of 4 kingdoms, all monarchies, but all of which arose out of "The Crossing." Apparently that was a group of ships that traveled from what sounds like North America to Europe. There are hints of Britain and France, but Tearling is named for the man who founded it. This is the first book I have read this year and it was a good start. I enjoy fantasy books and indeed this novel doesn't have the most unique plot but it's different enough to be very enjoyable. I especially like the characters than could have been tropes but are much more. Kelsea and Mace are somewhat stereotypes but their flaws make them unique.
I also loved the reference to our world which Erika Johansen sparkled through her story.
