2019 update: still owns my ass

I really enjoyed Vicious and the plot and ambiguous characters held me captivated. I love Schwab's writing so much and she is definitely an autobuy author for me. I also love the tiny Nashville easter egg in this book! I hope this book ends up getting a spectacular film adaptation in the future!

I think that telling you too much about the plot of this book might easily ruin it for you, so all I’m going to say is this. There are two main characters, Victor and Eli. In college, they were best friends. Now they are each other’s nemesis. How that came to pass, what happened in the ten years separating the past and present and who else gets dragged into this fight.. Well, you’ll have to find out for yourselves.

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. I can certainly understand why it's such a well-loved book. The concept around superheroes/anti heroes is very interesting, especially because it's done in a untraditional way. Then you also have the question of who is the bad/good guy and how do you determine that they are good or bad.
The plot was solid and paced quite well. I liked the build of intensity using time. The characters were complex enough so I wasn't feeling detached.

If I hadn't just purely enjoyed this book so much, it would not be a 5-star book. It reads like a YA book, which makes sense because the author writes mostly YA, so it reads very quickly. It also feels exactly like a classic (and by that, I do mean OLD) superhero rivalry story, which is exactly why I enjoyed it so much. All that said, the characters fell a little flat and parts of it were predictable, but it was still so good for me to read exactly when I read it.

This was pretty good! Fast paced and very entertaining.
Re-read: Same thoughts as before with the added bonus of looking forward to Vengeful. Can't wait to experience more of these characters. ...more
