Okay, so I have never read a book by Victoria Schwab before, this was my first. She does not disappoint! Holy hell!! From the moment I started this book I was sucked into it. The world that she has created is amazingly insane! I love everything about it! I'm kind of sad to hear that this is only a duelology for that reason. I could keep reading about Kate and August for the rest of my life and be a very happy woman!! Wow! Just Wow!

So as you guys may know from reading my reviews I am not that good at summarising a plot so I am not going to try as I have included the summary from Goodreads above.
I don't know where to begin, I was really excited to start reading this and I am glad I picked it up. At first when I started reading this I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to like it. The start was a little slow and a tad confusing however this all change very quickly and I ended up loving it, hence the 5 stars.

This Savage Song has a very interesting premise: a near-future North America where monsters plague the land. The Southside is ruled by Flynn who keeps the monsters at bay through an army, and the Northside, led by Harker, whom people pay to protect them. These monsters, the Corsai, Malchai, and Sunai, are birthed from violent acts, with Corsai being birth from non-lethal acts, Malchai being born from murder, and Sunai being birthed from mass murders. And we follow Kate, the rebellious daughter of Harker who is always trying to prove to her dad she is tough and mean like him. In order to gain information on Harker, Flynn sends August to the boarding school where Kate goes so that he can spy one her. Then the story goes from there...

Unfortunately, as cool as the premise sounded, overall I was let down by this book. To me, it had a very Twilight feel. August reminded me of Edward Cullen in that he was a monster who didn't want to be a monster; he was perfectly humanized. While I liked August as a character, I was not a fan of Kate. I found her to be too arrogant and unlikable, and I didn't find her redeeming at the end. I wish the characters and the world were more fleshed out. While tidbits about the world were thrown in, I was hoping that a book about monsters would be filled with creepy atmospheric elements, but it just wasn't. The monsters themselves were hardly described more than fangs and teeth. The story was really fast paced, hardly leaving much room for a any type of relationship to develop between Kate and August. The ending was predicable. The villain was nothing more than a cardboard cut out. Overall, I was just left with a feeling of wanting more...

While this isn't a bad book, I just wasn't completely invested in the world, characters, or story. This book can work as a stand alone, which is good because I probably won't be picking up the second book. ...more
