This historical fiction story is based on the real life Kurc family. They are a Jewish family living in Radom, Poland during WWII, apart from one son, Addy, who is a musician living in Toulouse, France.

During the reading I kept thinking that there are too many characters involved in this book and at times I felt there was too much sentimentality and romance. Instead of highlighting the standard horror and details of the War, she focuses on magnifying intertwined stories of hope, survival, and resilience. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of heartache and horror that can never be eliminated from any story that takes place in Europe during WWII but the suspense and resilience in her story, chronicled by the terrifying experiences of this one, ...more

This had got to be one of the best books of the year! The story of a Polish Jewish family in the heart of Hitlers madness WWII. The book spans the lives of the mother, father and 5 siblings as they live in the turmoil and try to survive. The characters are based on true events from the authors family.

When I find a great book like this, I usually devour it. This book was so beautiful, yet not for the feint of heart, I only read a few chapters per night. I look so forward to more works by this fir ...more
