This is a wonderful debut book. It centers on the Alcantra family living in Malaya under British Colonialism until the Japanese occupation.
The story is told in two time lines: 1930’s and 1945.

As difficult as the content was to read, I still really liked the entire book. I learned a lot about an area I am not all too familiar with. I wish there had been an author's note at end, I always enjoy those, not sure if the audio was missing it or if there wasn't one. ...more
