October group read in retro chapter chicks. I thought the Book of Magic was going to be Hoffman’s swan song. I thought wrong. She is the queen of American magical realism for a reason. Anyone who can make the Scarlett Letter, one of my least favorite books, appealing is among the best of the best. I found the story to be magical and the prose to be easy reading, enough to finish the story in a day. This is an enchanting book. It is a book about a book.
Ivy is a young girl who becomes pregnant and runs away from her Beacon Hill home. She joins a cult not realizing what her life will become. She loves books and they are not allowed she has no voice in this cult. She marries the cult’s leader. She has her child who she names Mia. She teaches her to read from her hidden books.
