What Members Thought

When I was in high school I remember that The Scarlet Letter was required reading, I don’t seem to remember much of it. I was intrigued by the premise of the woman behind the story. Although this is not a retelling it was very interesting.

Isobel Gamble is a young and talented seamstress from Scotland. She moves with her opioid-addicted spouse, Edward, to Salem, Massachusetts, in the 19th century and ends up abandoned when Edward abruptly leaves her. Left to her own devices in a town that doesn't welcome outsiders, Isobel struggles to make a life for herself. She's quite talented as a seamstress and works for a local dress shop (and is swindled for her talent by the owner). While making her way, Isobel meets a young and tormented

As advertised, this is NOT a retelling of The Scarlett Letter. Which is fine with me, just thought I should clear that up,
The story is that Hawthorne based all of his other books on a certain period in his life, except for this one. Albanese imagines, here, that Hawthorne actually has a relationship with Hester(Isobel in the book). She does a fair job of it too, There was something that just did not grab me though. The writing was good, the story was there, but something held me back from lovin ...more

4.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐🌗 A very unique and interesting immigrant story set mostly in the town of Salem, MA in the early 1800s.
I had *no idea* that the man who wrote The Scarlet Letter was from Salem and that he had family connections to the witch trials of the late 1660s. Nor did I know that a lot of the stories he wrote were based on real events in his life, suggesting that the SL was probably based on a real-life adulterous affair. (I like authors who do their research and provides sources.)
