This book definitely made me cry 🥺

I don’t even know what to say really. I loved the Fig telling her part of the story. I mean as a tree lover that was something super special. Kostas with his love of animals and nature made me love him from point A. But, there are some sad things in the book. I’m not even going to hint at those parts, they involve people, wildlife and trees. The owners of The Happy Fig damn near broke me. (Read the book)

I love challenges and this book fulfilled two.

Reading Around the World: Country No 118 Visited - Cyprus
This book is a well-written, engaging story about a familiar trope: two people fall in love who shouldn't - in this case a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot; to most, mortal enemies.
But they do and that love survives the taboo of a Greek Christian marrying a Turkish Muslim.

My first book by Elif Shafak and I very much enjoyed it. This is my second book this year, coincidentally, that focused on this time in history and on/near the island of Cyprus. This book did not go into the details of the conflict like the other book did, so I was happy to have read that one first to better understand what was happening in Cyprus for these characters and their lives on the the island. You can certainly read this one without knowing as much but I think it adds to the story to kn

“I wish I could have told him that loneliness is a human invention. Trees are never lonely. Humans think they know with certainty where there being ends and someone else's starts. With there roots tangled and caught up underground, linked to fungi and bacteria, trees harbour no such illusions. For us, everything is interconnected.”
