I thought the book started out a little slow, but then it got better for me. I really loved Chava the Golem. She was a sweet character and a force to be reckoned with if she couldn't control her emotions. I really felt for her and all of the things she had to endure in her mind. I was hoping for a romance of sorts between her and Ahmad but the way it ends..who knows right. I would actually like to read a sequel to this book but I'm not sure if there is going to be one. I can only hope! ...more

I loved this one from the opening pages. I knew it was going to blow me away right from the start. Actually, even before I read it I knew I was in for a treat. The book itself is a pleasure to hold. The cover is gorgeous and the little details of the book itself make for a great experience.

This is a debut and man, can this girl write. The writing is wonderful and her scene setting was really good. I will say that while reading this I was reminded of my first experience reading Harry Potter. The

Such a GOOD book... elements of historical fiction AND fantasy. I was more than impressed.

From supersummary.com

The novel follows the lives of two dramatically different magical beings dropped onto the streets of New York City in 1899.

The first is a golem, which is a ready-to-order woman made solely to be a wife. Made of clay, she is not truly human; she lacks free will, all of her actions decided by her master. Yehudah Schaalman created her for Otto Rotfeld, a terribly sad man desperate for aff

From the book jacket [This] novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. … Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert.

My reactions
Gosh, I really wanted to like this book. I looked forward to learning more about the myths of these two cultures – ancient Judaism and Syrian lore. But it never really captured my

This actually started out really slow and I almost gave up on it, but I'm glad that I didn't because it ended up being one of my favorite books that I've ever read. It was really original and focused on cultures that we usually don't get to read about. All the characters were really interesting and contributed in their own way to the story. And the setting and description of NYC at the turn of the century drew me in and painted a picture for me that tied everything together. I'm so ex

Great story, but there was just something lacking in this book. I found the writing plain and non-descriptive, and it needed a really good edit as it was soooo long for the plot - at times I felt myself skim reading. I'll probably still read the sequel though because I did fall in love with the characters, and am intrigued to follow the next twist in the tale.
