"Like all people in all times, the emigrant men and women, as well as the Native American men and women, of the 1840s were complex bundles of fear and hope, greed and generosity, nobility and savagery. And in the end, each of them was, of course, an individual, as unique and vital and finely nuanced as you or me." – from the Author’s Note by Daniel James Brown

Before I talk about this remarkable true story, I have to subject you to a small rant. I finished this book a couple of weeks ago

Who in the United States has not heard of the horrific Donner Tragedy of 1846/1847? I knew a little of this event based on a TV show I viewed some years ago. I'm rating this a 4 star read but I found The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics to be a better story and overall more well-done than The Indifferent Stars Above. Brown holds nothing back and tells the horrific events of the demise and and the small survival rate of the party.

Brown takes a personal interest in one of the party, twenty-one-year-old Sarah Graves. Brown also attempted his best to follow the route of the party.

Newly married Sarah, is excited to beg

Subtitle: The Harrowing Saga of a Donner Party Bride

Brown looks at the events that led to and resulted from the infamous Donner Party trapped in a blizzard in the mountains near present day Lake Tahoe. I think that most people today have at least heard of the Donner Party, and for most of us the single thing we remember is their descent into cannibalism, but Brown gives us a more complete picture. We learn of their goals, hopes, and dreams, of their
