I really liked this novel. I would like to read it again someday in the future.
The first theme that appeals to me is of Blackthorn's transformation, his enlightenment. He begins by thinking that the Japanese are backward rubes and the English are superior in all ways, so he's happy to tell the Japanese with how insignificant they are in terms of country size, naval/military, and mercantile power. But then he comes to appreciate the cleanliness and order ("manners") of their culture and thinks, " ...more
