Subtitle: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women

In the early 20th century, young women were hired to paint luminous paint on watch dials and, with advent of WWI, on instrument panels. The element that caused the luminosity was radium. The method they used was “lip, dip, paint” – pointing the fine paintbrushes they used by twirling the bristle ends in their mouths. But they didn’t know that they were being poisoned. I rated this as a five star book for many reasons.
First, Kate Moore does a fantastic job at bringing the women infected with radium to life. In so many books that deal with science, authors forget to humanize those affected, this is not the case in The Radium Girls. I felt such sympathy for their pain and the losses the women endured from losing their jobs to the burden they felt they placed on their family and friends. I was very moved by the voices of the women that worked for Radium Dial.

Wow, this story was a page turner. I never heard of these girls before which, hearing what they went through, is amazing. The story is definitely a 5 star read but the writing just didn't match up. I can still highly recommend this read to anyone looking for a fascinating, page turner of a story.

Received a copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest, fair review.

It details the lives of the young women who suffered after working painting numerals on watch and clock faces with radium impregnated paint. The greed and evilness of the executives in that industry, who hid this information and lied about it, is outrageous. The tale is compellingly told but it reads more like a draft of a student thesis to me. The research she did is amazing. A different editor could h ...more

Radium Girls was an interesting read, with a great start and finish. Giving us not only the human element on something we often only hear the legal aspects of, but the aftermath of what happen to the towns the the radium company left.

It's clear that Ms. Moore did her research in writing this book. With interviews from family and friends of the shining girls, almost putting you right next to them on the studio floor. Ms. Moore takes us through the excitement of being hired into these companies,
