First published in 1986, Atwood’s novel describes an America much different but easily imaginable from today’s democracy. Offred tells her story of life as a Handmaid, in the Republic of Gilead, a monotheocracy, run by the Sons of Jacob. The birthrate has plummeted and the leaders of Gilead lay the blame on the “sinful” ways of women. Now Offred and other Handmaids are valued only as long as their ovaries are working. They live, one to a household, with their assigned Commander and his wife. Onc

One of my friends (worked with me at the bookstore, and now in my book club) recommended this novel a few times over the year, and finally I had a rainy day to read it. I first read this novel a few years ago and enjoyed the writing - clever, witty, raw and powerful - as well as the characterizations. I am not a huge fan of dystopian novels, (I cannot explain why) but when I read one that really gets into my mind, I am just enthralled. Gilead is set in the US, and is written by ...more

As you can see, I liked this book enough to read it twice. The second time was for my book club. The members who attended the meeting did not like it at all. (That was two votes against and one abstain - she hadn't even read the book). The ones who did read and comment thought it 'too predictable.
I found the book CHILLING. These events could really happen, at least to my way of thinking.

This is my first Atwood and it will not be my last! This story was so hard to read but because of the fantastic writing of Margaret Atwood, I was turning pages at such a fast rate. I didn't want to put it down and found myself sneaking moments away to read. I think in the hands of another author, this book may not have worked as well for me as the content was difficult but Atwood pulls it off amazingly well. The added Historical Footnotes at the end were so very clever and able to smooth out the

I was not as in love with this story as I expected I'd be. Maybe this was because I waited so long to read this and had already expected some of the "shocking" plot? Or maybe it was because the ending was just "blah"? Dunno really. I intended to actually watch the show after I read the book and now, I'm not really interested. It was an interesting story, introducing outrageous ideas (those don't seem as unlikely as they might have when it was written), and definitely original. It was just "okay"

I read this because of all the stir the Democrats have been making these days. I don't get all the fuss. This is fairly typical dystopian literature. I don't see any "horrifying parallels" to modern culture. Honestly, not the worst book I've ever read, but I won't be reading it again for it's lack of actual story and plot.

I'm giving this a 2.5, but rounding up for the sake of the star system. I've been meaning to read this ever since the saw the movie(1990) back when I was in high school. I guess I expected the book to give me a bit more information than the movie provided, I was wrong. It gave me the same information - so at least that would a good thing, knowing that the movie is pretty close to the book.

Read in conjunction with Children of Men (James) for a dystopian theme f2f discussion. Liked this one more than CofM. Do wish there had been more description of the underlying religious society that ran the show and also more about how/why the society came to this point. Had not seen the movie before reading but was vaguely familiar with the general story.
