This was an advanced reader edition that I won from the publisher. The book was well researched and the author's premise was to present an unbiased factual account of Nero's early years. What I did enjoy about the book was how Nero was presented, an artist and a bit of a rebel that grew into his role as emperor. He was surrounded by individuals (e.g. his mother, his second wife) that sought to chart his destiny, one that would also benefit those individuals. As with many stories of Ancient Rome,

This rather sympathetic bio-novel covering the early life of Nero was written in an enjoyable style from Nero's pov but with occasional brief chapters voicing other minor characters who comment on the action- almost like a Greek chorus. Descriptions made it easy to imagine the settings. Appreciated the family tree and the maps to keep track of the who's and where's.
