I enjoyed this book. I was kept guessing all the way til the end. The setting was very well described and I could easily picture it. The characters likable and believable. This is my 4th Mary Stewart book. I didn't like it as well as the other 3 but I think it's because I was not as much into the governess character as some of the other heroines like in Thornyhold and The Gabriel Hounds. Thornyhold being my favorite at this time. I'd highly recommend it tho for the suspense and romance. It does ...more

This was a favorite Stewart, one I read again and again in my much younger days. When I needed a book set in the decade I was born (1950s)for 2018 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge, saw that a new ebook edition had become available, and read the review which mentioned it was set contemporarily wifh its original publication, I just knew I had to read it again!

I have a hard time with mystery/thrillers and this one just did not grab me like I had hoped. The ending (view spoiler) I did like the atmospheric feel of the story though. This was my first Mary Stewart and I'm looking forward to giving her another try. ...more
