I'm in the minority unfortunately. I thought the book was okay. I was hoping it would blow my mind and be a favorite like The Count Of Monte Cristo, as I was afraid of that book too, but alas, it was not =(

I might as well put the ole spoilers tag up on here! Oh and even though Jean's name will be changed in the book, I'm sticking with Jean so I won't get all messed up!

Phenomenal!
I hesitated for so long to read this classic and I'm so glad that I finally read it.
This is by far one of the best books that I've ever read. Victor Hugo is a master writer, having used so many different literary devices as well as writing styles. His descriptions of settings and characters as well as the history of the period created a beautiful backdrop for such a tragic story. I love the parallel between Fantine, Jean Valjean, and Marius, all doing everything in their power to keep Cosette sa ...more
