My brother saw the movie and said it was great - "very funny." So I bought the book on whim (scanning the shelves at the book store). I found it hard to read because of the language. It didn't really read "hilarious" - has a very dry humor. I have since seen the movie and have an "easier" opinion / perspective. And it's only then that I realized it was originally written in 1932 - THAT explains a LOT! ...more

A fun book to read. If we crossed Jane Austen with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy we'd get something like this novel. It pokes a lot of fun at character "types" and uses satire for humor. It's very light-hearted throughout, short in length, and fairly easy to read. I would probably like to read this again in the future, as a palate cleanser between heavier books. ...more
