In 1793 an epidemic of yellow fever severely affected the population of Philadelphia, then the capital of the United States. Anderson crafts a very good work of historical fiction based on the actual events. The young heroine is Mattie Cook. First, this is a YA book thus the 3 star rating. An informative book but I'm just not a YA reader. The story overall was interesting and it feels well-researched. I think this book would be great to give YA readers an introduction to Yellow Fever as it happened here in the States and a definite feel for the times. I am from the Philadelphia area so this added interest for me. I found the historical notes in the back really informative and enjoyable to read.

In late 1793, a fourteen year old girl, Mattie Cook is watching people die in Philadelphia. As the fever spreads and hits closer to home, Mattie has to grow up fast. This was an interesting book looking at the history of the Fever of 1793. We see it all from a young girl's point of view which adds a bit of vulnerability. While this book good for any age, I would say anyone younger than 10 year may not understand all of it. ...more
