What an emotional roller coaster!!!
This book was very well written with beautiful character development and characters that were so lifelike in the face of tragedy and deception.
The story is set on the fictional Janus Island, off the coast of Australia, where Tom and his infertile wife Isabel live for years at a time. Isabel is constantly in a state of depression and in need of medical care for not only her mental health but her reproductive health. Her mental health changes, when a baby washes ...more

Although the book started very slow for me, as the anticipation of the plot grew, so did my interest. The question of motherhood/parenting and decisions we make "out of character" resonated in my mind and had me as confused as they did Tom. I happen to be visiting Australia (although not that region) as I finished the book which was kind of cool too.
