The story, beginning in the 9th century, is told by a very young Uhtred. He is captured by the Danes while fighting for his home in Northern England, as the Danes move in to take over his country. He becomes the fostered son of a Danish warlord, and he grows up to think of himself as a Dane. The love of his lost home stays with him though, as he grows, and he is pulled into two identities as he tries to unravel who he really is.

Liked that the main character starts as a boy and we learn what's happening along with him. Lots of battles but somehow Cornwell is able to make them interesting even to those, like me, who aren't really into that part. My only complaint is the use of unfamiliar period location names- I had to keep looking in the glossary to orient myself so I could visualize the movements in the book.
