This book was so good! I can't believe I have had this book in my stacks for a few years now! The story is so bizarre and sad. I loved it!

When Margaret is called upon by Vida Winter, a famous author, to come and write her biography she has no idea what she is in for with this woman.

Vida tells the story of her life as a child, but she is not who she seems. The twist ending

Diane Setterfield weaves a tale that is intriguing and gothic that harkens back to tales of Charlotte Brontë, Henry James, and Wilkie Collins.
This mysterious tale involves family and the sinister secrets that burden the key players of the book.
Typically, I can figure out a mystery quite quickly, but the author had so many twists and turns and such a captivating story that I was left guessing until the end. These twists and turns also left the main character, Margaret Lea, guessing until the end

Reading can be dangerous.

That warning comes very early in this gothic tale of a reclusive sometime-biographer, Margaret, and the even more reclusive, prolific, and esteemed writer Miss Vida Winters who summons her to Yorkshire to write her real life story before illness takes her and it's too late. Miss Winters baits her hook well, and intrigued, curious also about the missing Thirteenth Tale from a collection of Miss Winters' stories, the very reclusive Margaret finds herself in Yorkshire, list

The Thirteenth Tale is a gothic suspense novel. It is has family secrets, evil twins and haunting pasts. Vida Winter, a famous novelist, has evaded journalists for years about her books. She engages Margaret Lea to write her biography. Margaret also has family secrets which develop while she encounters Vida’s story. It is a remarkable read with hints of Rebecca and The Women in White. Should be read by all.

I was thrilled with this. It was so creepy, twisted, and dark. Reminded me of how I felt when I read Shirley Jackson's, We Have Always Lived in the Castle. I am not saying they are similar. But, I felt the same thrill with this one, and it was a big page turner for me. The story of Charlie and Isabel grabbed me, but the twins...well. I will leave it there. So many twists and turns. I wanna read it again in a few months and savor it now that I know all the secrets. And I don't really re-read book ...more

A book that harkens back to the classic gothic novels – ghosts, mad relatives hidden in the attic, secret passageways, spinster governesses who fall in love with the doctor, loyal housekeepers, reticent gardeners.

There are stories within stories and a compelling forward momentum, despite the constant return to the past.

I was consumed with trying to figure out the time frame. Isabelle is taken away in a brougham. Margaret is seemingly without a computer (or even a typewriter), but has phone ser

I picked this up because of all the rave reviews, but usually over-hyped books fall short in the reading. Not this one. This was a real old-fashioned gothic. I grew up reading the gothic romance genre in the late 50s/ early 60s and while I've long since forgotten most of those stories the overall feeling sticks with me and this book has it. Even the fact that the book's time setting is vague keeps modern touches (cell phones & laptops, etc.) from intruding on the mood.

Romance was not really a

Margaret read for 6 hours every night. She really has no life outside of books and working for her dad. She seems an unlikely person to become involved in a mystery. This book is engaging enough to make you want to continue reading until the end. The characters have depth and become real and you'll want to know what happens to them but when the end comes it's a bit anti-climatic. It's not a disappointing book by any means and I recommend it to my friends.
