I felt really sorry for Jane when she was a child living with her stepmother and three kids. They were so horrible to her, they hit her, verbally abused her, they just sucked as people!
When Jane was so down and seemed to me to have a little bit of a mental breakdown from all that was done to her, a nice man came to visit her and see that she was okay. Mr. Lloyd asked Jane many things and one of them was about her wanting to go to school. These string of questions and kindness fro ...more

I hated it in high school, I still don't like it. I remember in high school many girls thought it was "so romantic!" Huh? Rochester is an insufferable jerk (what's with the gypsy garb scene?). St John Rivers is even worse. Jane, dear, you are better off alone!
I only re-read it (March 2007) because our book club wanted to read a classic and we chose this one. I actually recommended it, hoping that I'd have more appreciation for it with maturity. I guess I do appreciate it more, and can look criti ...more

I just loved this book. I do not know why I waited so long to read.
I highly recommend reading.
I highly recommend reading.

I don't remember what year I read this. I did tho and it was awesome. Was having a convo with a friend and I decided to see if I reviewed it on GR. Now, I realize I don't have it marked as read. I do love gothics.

First read when I was 8 years old (1957), I HAD to reread this romantic classic. The story was fresh to me, the little orphan girl who was finally able to marry the man she loved. I found much joy in re-reading this book. Charlotte Bronte instilled in Jane a beauty of mind and soul. I loved the lyrical language. So glad that I could read it again.

3.5 STARS
"The novel focuses on the romance between Jane and Rochester, but Bronte clearly reveals a feminist message through a heroine arguing for sexual equality and refusing to adhere fully to the restrictive expectations of early Victorian society."
In some ways this novel reminded me of Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca but not as good. We get to see Jane's path to Thornfield but at times I was a bit bored with her observations and did not completely understand her love for Edward Rochester. A goo ...more

I am thinking I must be the only person who has never read this classic! I really wish there was a 4.5 star! I am glad I didn't read this book until I am a more mature woman as I am not sure I would have seen enough of love to really appreciate the novel. Having said that though, the story is really a glorified fairy tale so maybe a younger reader seeking sophisticated romance would appreciate the ending. Jane Eyre provides an undoubtable great female character to reflect upon and I guess aspire

A well written book with tons of dark elements and intriguing characters. I gave the book 4/5 stars because I didn't particularly care for any of Jane's male suitors.
