This beautiful, lyrical book will live with me for a very long time. I'm rather stunned at the number of negative reviews here on Good Reads!

Based on actual memoirs, letters, and diaries, this is the story of one family's survival during the occupation of Warsaw in WWII, that family being the zookeeper's for the Warsaw Zoo, and their courageous involvement with the Underground and in hiding Jews and others until they could be sent to safety. This book has been on my radar for a long time. I read and listened to it. It was an interesting read but not one I would consider amazing. I think it was that while I was interested in the real-life characters, I just never connected fully with the writing. I learned more about Poland's experience during WWII which was really quite horrible and just as heartbreaking as war ever can be. ...more
