Money in the bank is another PG Wodehouse novel, but why else would you pick his novels except to read another of his stories. You don’t read a PG Wodehouse novel to, get shocked, learn the miseries of life, understand the nuances of crime detection, or get your eyes moist after reading a tragic love story. You read the master’s writings to feel light, to be entertained, to laugh at the hypocrisies of human behaviour, etc.

This is one of the great non-Jeeves & Wooster novels by good ol’ P.G. It has some of the best characters that only show up in a few books.
It’s got Lord Uffenham, a contemplative yet forgetful older gentleman who drops random facts whenever the spirit moves him. Next we have the American criminal husband and wife team of Dolly and Soapy Molloy with great slang. Finally there is the Molloys’ conniving frenemy Chimp Twist, another American criminal. As mentioned in many of the sparkling reviews of this novel, the enormous butler who isn't really a butler is the most interesting character here. He drifts in and out of lucidity in a most marvelous way. Chimp Twist and the Malloys wander through the pages as well with just enough of a word count to add a bit of interest without overstaying their welcome.

In terms of plot, situations, and dialogue, this is typical Wodehouse, and it even has some recurring characters. It FEELS like Wodehouse in his prime and, yet, it is curiously lacking in humor. This may have been due to the circumstances under which it was written but, whatever the case, I found this a PLEASANT book, but not really a FUNNY one.
