Sometimes the beginning grabs you, the vast middle is enjoyable and the ending is an explosion of fun. Quick Service has an adequate start and a moderately predictable ending, but the middle two thirds are very good Wodehouse indeed. The one-off novels from Mr. PG are a bit of a mixed bag. Especially in his glory days of the 30s and 40s, any Jeeves and Wooster, Blandings or Uncle Fred is going to be best in class comedy, but the assorted novels can be eccentric. A decent but not spectacular Wodehouse without any of his recurring characters. I realize his books are about as contrived as any fiction ever created (and this is not at all a bad thing in the hands of such a master), but this one seemed even more so. The reasons for everyone's interest in perloining the portrait were just too shallow to make the story gel, in my estimation.
