This is my 19th book by Wodehouse and definitely not the last one!

Like in Ring for Jeeves (1953) a real life creeps into this novel. First published in 1936 there is references to The Great Depression. And while brilliantly funny and happy go lucky story Laughing Gas shows not so pretty face of Hollywood - April June (love that name, btw)- the gold digging bitch extraordinaire, an alcoholic cousin Eggy and a miserable life of a child film star.

To paraphrase Bertie Wooster and keep this review clean, "What The Ho." I've been wandering through everything PG Wodehouse ever wrote and I've now arrived at a lovely stretch of the mature master with lots of lovely Bertie Wooster and Blandings Castle along with assorted Drones and a few Mulliners. An unusual fantasy theme for P.G. Wodehouse, rather emulating Thorne Smith. It may not seem as if a story of the hero temporarily changing bodies with a child-star would take well to the Wodehouse treatment, but I found it thoroughly enjoyable. The author is in his prime here, even if the incidents of the plot are more ludicrous than usual

The souls of an English aristocrat and a Hollywood child star get exchanged under the effect of ether at the dentist. The result is outlandish situations especially for the aristocrat who is in a child's body. As with all Wodehouse books there is a reversal of fortune towards the end and all turns out okay. This book also is a satire on Hollywood culture. Not the best of Wodehouse but still enjoyable. ...more
