This book forms a natural gateway between the schoolboy world of the early Wodehouse stories, and the more developed later books. In Mike Jackson, we have the archetypical Wodehouse school story hero. He is more or less an average guy, except for his stellar cricket ability, but he adheres to the peculiar code of schoolboy honor, and it is clear that we are meant to look up to him as a paragon of virtue. It also makes him pretty boring.
