I am still trying to recover from this excellent read. It is a novel from the headlines of today that was written in 2007. It is a story of Mariam, Laila, and the history of Afghanistan. Mariam was born an harami, a bastard, in a country where this is completely shameful. She is forced to marry at fifteen and spend the next twenty-five years being the wife of a tyrant and not truly knowing her full worth until it was much too late.
