These are some of the things I felt while reading the book.
1. Don't you think the book is a little two slow and needed a better pair of scissors?
2. Death as a narrator is a bit too unsettling for me.
3. The title Book Thief is a bit too overwhelming and a bit 'extra' for all the thievery the protagonist does.
4. I can't understand why the narrator keeps throwing spoilers in our face.

How can anything be ugly and beautiful?
This book is an example.
No, I do not LOVE the book, I love the book. I like it. Deeply. It's been with me for over six months I believe, and now finally I've finished it.
And it deserves the five stars. Such beauty, such ugliness(of war) and the the splendor of words.. ahh... it's poetical. Narrated by Death.

"Let me see some Tenderness connected with Death" - Scrooge asks the Ghost of Christmas yet to Come in the Christmas Carol. This book must have been inspired by that!
Death narrates a story set in Nazi Germany about a little girl (the book thief) and her small world. Premise is enough to get you started. The narrative in form of short chapters, very few characters, Death's subtitles (for the lack of a better word), Wit and irony(!) and intelligent tools of storytelling hooks you in. There is this quote from Paul Sweeney which goes “You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” You get that feeling about this book.
It's one of those books which you will run out of adjectives describing how good it is. I've had to realign my book ratings because of this.
