The Color Purple is truly an amazing book and one I wish I could give double the 5 stars to. Having first seen the film on a flight to Vancouver, I knew this would be a good story but I was unnerved by the epistolary approach, the dialect and the first person POV. I need not have worried. It gripped me from the first and became more intense as it progressed. There is so much courage in the face of abuse and tragedy in this novel and it is so uplifting.
