It wasn't news to me that McBride can inhabit a narrator and nimbly wield dry wit. What really struck me about this book, though, was how subtly and successfully he uses those things to highlight the complicated nature of (in contemporary terms, I suppose we'd say "problematize") John Brown and the broader work of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. A religious zealot gone round the bend?
