I’m not a fan of fairytale retellings, but this is an exception — and an exceptional book, period. Absolutely gorgeous writing, deeply moving, and a really strong sense of place. No wonder it was recommended by David and Melissa on the “Strong Sense of Place” podcast!

This one kept me guessing until the very end as to whether Faina was real or a figment of their imaginations. Although I'm not a reader who enjoys a lot of description, I did enjoy the author's sense of place in the wilderness of Alaska. I thought the characters were well drawn and empathetic. I agree with the other reviewers who said it bogged down in the middle. If I hadn't been halfway through, I probably would have set it aside. ...more

I enjoyed this book, but it is not a very happy read. Poignant, melancholy. The main characters have this amazing love and respect for one another. I admire those relationships. The author does a great job weaving the imaginary with the ordinary and creating magic. The pain and longing in this book is palpable.
