This was my first Erik Larson book and it won't be my last. I don't usually read nonfiction/history because it can be so dry. This book was anything but dry, it read like fiction/suspense. I recently visited Berlin and thought this book would be perfect to read since I participated in a history walk through the city visiting the Tiergarten and the Reichstag Building. Read this for my one of my book groups and I really enjoyed learning about this period in history. ErIk Larson writes narrative nonfiction very well and tells the story of Ambassador Dodd and his daughter, Martha very clearly. It provides more background on the United States pre World War II and helps to answer the questions regarding Hitler's rise to power. Great read. Although the topic was disturbing the author did an exceptional job of describing how Germany was as Hitler came into power. With the perspective of the American ambassador and his family who had unique access to the German government, the novel provides a unique insight into what the times were like.
