I really enjoyed this novel - I started reading and didn't stop! I loved the character of Quirke -what a great name for him too!! Dark, dreary, rainy Ireland and dark, dreary, rainy Boston - it all added to the mystery. Can't wait to read the next Quirke novel - I read the first two chapters at the back of the book and am ready to go!

Thank you so much Julie for opening my eyes to Benjamin Black! :)

Supposedly it takes place in Dublin and Boston, but for me it could have been anywhere.I got no sense of setting. I had thought I found a new author to read since this is the first in a series, but I am not sure ...more

I may have enjoyed this more if I had read instead of listeed too . The accents were annoying esp. Stafford. Several times it seemed as if thet forgot to change accents with the characters!!!

I'd give it a 3 1/2. A solid mystery, made more literary by the identity of the author: John Banville. ...more
