I enjoyed this book. Between the fire that destroyed the Fenice opera house to its re-opening after being completely rebuilt the author sandwiches stories of the disparate inhabitants of the unique Italian city of Venice. There was a preponderance of tales of ex-patriots, probably because the native Venetians are a very insular and embattled group. The author did manage to get some of them to reveal their stories and that helped to convey the reason that this book does not have the same intimacy

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil became such a cultural landmark that it's no wonder John Berendt waited 12 years to write a follow-up. Berendt's second book doesn't steer very far from his first in tone and style: he seems to have changed only the names and places. There's also less resolution in Falling Angels, which led to the love-it-or-hate-it reviews. Still, it entertains. Berendt has a keen eye for detail and an uncanny ability to insinuate himself into the upper reaches of society

Nice overview of people Berendt met in Venice where he visited just after a fortuitous (unfortunate for the theatre, but fortunate for him) visit to the city just after the Fenice opera house burned down in a mysterious fire. Although this often is considered "true crime" the crime bit (what happened at the opera house and eventual trial) is minimal - the real story are the lives of the people Berendt met and how they make up the character of a very unique city.
