After reading the Prequel to this book, Familiaris, in January, I needed to finish the story of the Sawtelle Family. A wonderful coming of age story, with a tad bit of unnecessary magical realism, I loved Edgar as much as I loved his grandfather, John. This book continues the story of the family business of the breeding and training of "sophisticated mutts" or Sawtelle Dogs. As I am getting my dog trained as I read this book, I was very engaged with the training stories and terminology.

The book overall was not great, in particular the ending was not satisfying but most of the book was enjoyable in how the story was told. If the ending had been stronger, the book overall would have been better.

I didn't understand what the hype was all about. I really didn't like this book. It dragged on for far too long!
