I was really undecided about this book after I finished reading it. Part of me liked the story about Edgar and his new breed of dogs; yet another part of me was unsatisfied with parts of the story and its ending. I think one thing that contributed to my dissatisfaction was all the hype surrounding the book. All that build-up, I guess I expected something different. I felt the story had more possibilities than what the author eventually did with it.

This is my favorite book right now...I might even like this one more than Poisonwood Bible. The amount of emotion this book stirred up in me is more than incredible. I loved it!!!! It's about dogs as much as it is people. It's an amazing story. The ending was so unexpected compared to what I thought was going to be predictable. I can only say this....WOW WOW WOW...and WOW again !!! If you read one book in the near future, this should be the one !! Put it on your bookshelf now on your 'to read' l ...more

The book begins as a beautifully written book. The author's understanding of dogs and his ability to write about dogs is incredible. The story mesmerizes me for the first 90% of the book. And then the ending leaves me like What???? I think I may go back and rewrite an ending for myself to make the book better. ...more

A great book! Wonderfully written, unique yet with Hamlet themes mixed in. Probably not for everyone due to its length and sadness, but I ended up reading it some of the time and listening to it on CD some of the time and think it is one of the best books I have read in years.
